How to reference the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS)

In papers, articles, reports, and presentations, we request that persons cite CHIS data with one of the following forms of citation or attribution, depending on the specific data source being used and how full a citation is appropriate.

  • When writing about the survey as an overall project, please refer to it as the "California Health Interview Survey" and the abbreviated version, "CHIS".


  • When citing a specific CHIS cycle or data, please refer to the "2001 California Health Interview Survey", "2003 California Health Interview Survey", or "2005 California Health Interview Survey" (based upon the cycle being referenced). The abbreviated version for citing the data should be "CHIS 2001" ("CHIS 2003", etc.), with the number coming after "CHIS".
