The California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) formerly was the Department of Health Services (DHS). In 2007, DHS split into the new California Department of Public Health and the Department of Health Care Services. DHCS funds many of the health programs in California, including Medi-Cal and Healthy Families. Together with the California Department of Public Health, the DHCS is a collaborative partner in CHIS.
Created in 1996 as a result of Blue Cross of California's creation of WellPoint Health Networks, a for-profit corporation, The California Endowment is a private, statewide health foundation with approximately $3 billion in assets. Since its inception, The Endowment has awarded more than 3,400 grants totaling over $988,000,000 to community-based organizations throughout California.
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is a federal research agency that studies cancer in the U.S. population.
First 5 California (also known as the California Children and Families Commission) was created as a result of the California Children and Families Act of 1998 (Proposition 10). It is designed to provide all children under the age of five with a comprehensive and integrated system of early childhood development services.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation seeks to improve the health and health care of all Americans. Through their grant programs they support training, education, research (excluding biomedical research), and projects that demonstrate the effective delivery of health care services.
The California Department of Mental Health (DMH) oversees the public mental health budget. It provides system leadership for state and local county mental health departments; provides system oversight, evaluation and monitoring; administers federal funds; and operates four state hospitals and an acute psychiatric program.
The Office of the Patient Advocate is an independent office under the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency and is responsible for protecting patient rights. The organization provides information on patient rights and responsibilities as part of the goal to ensure that consumers receive the level of health care to which they are entitled under California law.

It is involved in a number of coalitions and collaboratives supporting public health, the safety net, and health insurance for vulnerable populations.
